4th & 5th Grade Education at Apt Academy

Building Knowledge, Character, and Independence

As students grow, so should their academic challenges and personal responsibility. At Apt Academy, our upper elementary and early middle grades are rooted in traditional Christian values, including:
  • Kindness and mutual respect
  • Personal responsibility and accountability
  • Discipline and self-governance
  • Clear, thoughtful communication
  • A safe, structured learning environment
  • Peer collaboration and conflict resolution
These are critical transition years when students begin to take greater ownership of their learning and continue to build character and habits that will carry into high school and beyond. For many families, these years have made the gaps in public education more apparent. As students struggle with these transitions and personal development, providing a safe, structured environment is essential. Apt Academy provides a focused, values-aligned alternative to public school where students can grow academically and socially, without distractions and with proper guidance. Our goal is to build a strong foundation to support our students as they recognize and step into leadership opportunities in their communities.

A Personalized Learning Experience That Encourages Growth and Accountability

In upper elementary grades, students are beginning to find their independence and explore their own beliefs and values. This makes it even more crucial for them to participate where the right personal and community values are shared and reinforced. Our upper elementary program is designed to:
  • Strengthen academic foundations while introducing greater depth
  • Encourage responsibility, organization, and accountability
  • Support students as they grow into individuals and more independent learners
Operating as a structured homeschool alternative with teacher-led instruction, students will experience:
  • Individualized instruction and support based on readiness and ability
  • Small class sizes to allow for more meaningful support and guidance
  • A consistent, focused learning environment where expectations are clear
At this stage, students are encouraged and challenged to take ownership of their work and their choices, while still receiving the support and guidance they need to succeed.

A Classroom That Balances Structure, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking

Students in upper-elementary classrooms are moving beyond foundational learning to more analytical and collaborative work. Students will regularly participate in:
  • Group projects and collaborative learning
  • Hands-on activities that apply what they’ve learned
  • Class discussions that build critical thinking skills
  • Independent work supported by teacher guidance
These experiences will help students learn to:
  • Think more deeply about concepts and how to apply them
  • Communicate clearly and listen to others
  • Work effectively in team settings, leveraging both strengths and weaknesses
  • Take responsibility for their role in individual and group work
  • Effectively problem-solve
  • Recognize and respond to leadership opportunities
The 4-5th-grade classrooms are designed to be structured, engaging, and academically focused.

Expanding on Academic Foundations Across Core Subjects

As students progress, they begin to discover and explore new subjects as well as their own individual passions and strengths. Here, they’ll explore all subjects in greater depth and complexity.

Students build on and refine skills in:

  • Reading comprehension and analysis
  • Writing, grammar, and communication
  • Spelling and language development (vocabulary)
  • Math, including problem-solving and multi-step concepts

They’ll also begin exploring broader subject areas, including:

  • Science, History, and Social Studies
  • Foundations of government and civic understanding
  • Typing and technology skills
  • Physical fitness/movement

We’re aiming to ensure students are not only learning content, but also developing the skills and discipline needed for long-term academic success.

Learning Through Application, Exploration, and Practice

Developmentally, students at this age benefit from learning that is active, engaging, and personally meaningful.

Our Program Integrates:

Students Will Learn:

Students Will Develop Through:

This approach helps students build both knowledge and confidence as they take on more advanced material. Some students may be quite comfortable, at this point, moving beyond their grade level in a variety of subjects, and work will be tailored to meet those challenges.

A Structured Environment That Prepares Students for What's Next

These years are about preparing students for the expectations of higher-level academics. At Apt Academy, we provide:
  • Clear expectations and consistent accountability
  • A calm, focused classroom environment
  • Supportive teachers who guide and challenge students
  • A setting where learning remains the priority
Students are encouraged to develop:
  • Strong study habits
  • Personal responsibility
  • Respect for others and themselves
  • Confidence in their abilities
  • Leadership skills
This foundation prepares them for success in the next stage of their education.

About Brandon Jackson

As an educator it is my responsibility to protect and educate every student that enters my classroom. I must do the best of my ability to exhaust every resource I possess to ensure my students succeed.

In addition to teaching at Apt Academy, I am the owner/ operator of Oregon Texas Line Fitness (OTL). With teaching classes at both the Academy and the gym I am able to reinforce that repetition is the key to learning and that it is about progress, not perfection.
