Career Prep & Discovery

Career Discovery and Preparation at Apt Academy

Preparing Students for Their Futures

As students complete their K-12 education and earn their GEDs, one question they hear, and likely ask themselves, is “What comes next?”

For many students and young adults, the transition from school to career can be daunting. It often feels expansive, rich with opportunity, yet simultaneously full of uncertainty.

At Apt Academy, we realize that this stage isn’t just about closure; it’s about the future and what doors open for them. That’s why we’re building career discovery and preparation into our program.

Once students have passed their GED, our program will help bridge the gap between academics and real life, whether that means pursuing further education, entering a career, or simply taking time to explore which option best suits them and their goals.

Career Exploration with Purpose and Direction

It can feel overwhelming for students to make decisions about their future without exposure to their options. Often, students declare their intentions and feel locked into a career or degree path without fully knowing what it means for them or whether it’s a good long-term fit.

At Apt Academy, career exploration isn’t a one-time conversation. It’s a process that makes time and space for exposure, exploration, guidance, and experience.

Our program will introduce students to a range of career paths and opportunities through:

  • Goal exploration and setting
  • Career research and discovery
  • Exposure to various industries and work roles through speakers and trips
  • Internships and externships
  • Discussions around future opportunities, including higher education, trade schools, and apprenticeships

As with all of our educational programs, career discovery and preparation will be tailored to each student’s unique needs and goals. We’ll work with students to ask and answer crucial questions for their path moving forward:

  • What are my career goals?
  • What type of work suits me best?
  • What is my ideal workplace or environment?
  • What are my aptitudes and potential career strengths?
  • What do I enjoy and where might I excel?
  • Will I need a degree or certification?
  • Are there alternative pathways for my goals?
  • Are there opportunities for apprenticeships or on-the-job training?

This approach means students are moving forward with clarity, knowing what they want rather than defaulting to perceived expectations or a one-size-fits-all pathway.

Real World Experiences to Build Clarity and Confidence

For many students, a dream job is just that, an idealized version of their career based on passion and not experience. Understanding a career is one thing, but until they’ve seen it firsthand, it’s hard to know whether it’s truly a good fit.

Our program will provide students with:

The goal at this stage is to allow students to explore their interests, build confidence, and better understand not only what the paths to their goals look like day-to-day but also in the long term.

Building Practical Skills for Life Beyond the Classroom

As parents and educators, we know this stage isn’t only about career exploration but also about building practical skills to help them succeed in life.

Our goal is to equip them with the skills and confidence they’ll need to succeed in the workplace and beyond, regardless of the path they choose.

Students will receive guidance and support in the following areas:

  • Resume writing and interview skills
  • Professional communication and etiquette
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Study skills and strategies
  • Financial literacy and money management

Regardless of the path and future students choose, these skills will be the foundation for future success, whether they enter the workforce, pursue a trade, or continue their education.

Building Independence and Readiness

Often, career prep involves an aptitude test followed by some secondary research and decision-making.

At Apt Academy, we take a different approach. We want students to take ownership of their decisions and make them based not only on their aptitudes but also on their individual goals and the strengths they can develop.

We’ll help students:

  • Identify their interests, strengths, and aptitudes (and understand how they’re different)
  • Take ownership of their decisions and their goals
  • Develop a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility
  • Approach each opportunity with curiosity, clarity, and confidence

We want students to leave this phase of the program feeling prepared for their next steps and confident that the choice they’ve made is the right next step for them.
